AGA Asks Gaming Community to Support Sports Betting in NJ. On 25th September, AGA stated that the legalization of sports betting is around the corner according to them. Indeed, the AGA sent a note to its members to ask to continue supporting the cause. The AGA brought the same message to the National Indian Gaming Association’s (NIGA) conference last week.
If you remember, in 2011, New Jersey passed a bill to legalize sports betting. However, before punters place any bets, the major sports leagues filed a lawsuit. To summarize the lawsuit, the sports leagues deemed that sports betting infringed on the Professional and Amateur Sports Act.
A never-ending battle
As you probably know, the case has been in court for many years. The appeal to the ban was rejected many times already by the supreme court. Even if New Jersey passed a bill in 2014 to legalize it.
Today, according to the AGA 20 states have filed an amicus to support NJ’s cause. Of course, should the AGA succeed in their appeal and sports book is finally legalized in NJ, this would benefit the garden state.
Perhaps, the momentum that New Jersey currently has will have a positive influence on the court case. As you know, New Jersey recently legalized fantasy sports betting. But also, the states signed an agreement with Delaware and Nevada to allow interstate poker. One thing is certain, we only hope that the supreme court will take into consideration the revenues the sportsbook industry could generate to NJ. At the moment, NJ received over 200 million in tax revenue from online gambling this year. For now, we can only wait for the result of the latest appeal.
